Dry needing is an invasive therapeutic procedure of inserting sterile filament needles into the skin and muscle of identified myofascial trigger points. These needles may be left in situ for varying lengths of time or manipulated to achieve the desired physiological effects such as reduced pain, improvement in range of motion and function. When done correctly a local twitch response may occur over the trigger point, which is associated with a successful application of the needle with improved physiological effects. Dry needling can be performed superficially or deeper into the trigger point. For individuals who are very irritable and have painful trigger points then a superficial application of the needle is recommended.
